Theatre Annual 76 Published

We are pleased to announce the publication of Theatre Annual 77 (2024)!

It is my pleasure to introduce Theatre Annual’s 2024 issue, with essays reflecting a diverse array of current interests in theatre and performance studies. Taking a variety of methodological and theoretical approaches, these essays turn our attention to the concrete workings of theatre in order to contribute substantive theoretical insights.

We are very proud to present essays on early twentieth-century theatre technology, contemporary re-stagings of Shakespearean classics, and an exciting transnational re-evaluation of Canadian playwright Winnifred Eaton. We are quite excited as well to present the work of the ATDS's two 2024 Emerging Scholars Award winners, Gabrielle Lewis and Carlina Perna, writing (respectively) at the intersection of museum and performance studies and contemporary trans theatre. We here at Theatre Annual consider it a high privilege to support the exciting and excellent new work of our field's emerging scholars.

Featuring:

Theatre Annual is the oldest theatre periodical continuously published in the United States. It is dedicated to examining theatre and performance of the Americas. We construe “America” broadly to include North, Central, and South America and the Caribbean Islands. Articles may treat work in these geographic areas or work from these areas that is presented elsewhere in the world. We welcome articles on the history and ethnography of performance, drawing from such areas as theatre studies, performance studies, popular culture, music, anthropology, dance, communication, philosophy, folklore, history, and areas of interest that cross disciplinary lines.
